Dress Code

🐾 Alta Vista Elementary Dress Code

Alta Vista Elementary dress code standards comply with Redondo Beach Unified School District (RBUSD) Board policy. Our dress code is designed to promote safety, comfort, inclusion, and readiness to learn.

Students who are not dressed in accordance with these standards will be respectfully reminded of the expectations. When necessary, families may be contacted to provide a change of clothing. Students will return to class as soon as the concern has been addressed.

Recognizing the relationship between personal dress and personal attitude, students are encouraged to dress in a manner that demonstrates pride both in themselves and in their school.

RBUSD Dress Code

“Board policy requires a student’s clothing be safe for the student and those around him/her. The standards for dress were developed with input from staff, parents, community members and students. Student clothing will not be disruptive to the school’s operations and the students. The Board prohibits the presence of any apparel, jewelry, accessory, note-book, and manner of grooming or other paraphernalia which, by virtue of its color arrangement, trademark or any other attribute, denotes membership in gangs and/or which advocates drug use, violence, discrimination and/or disruptive behavior.”

Alta Vista Dress Code Standards

👕 Clothing

Students should wear clothing that is safe, comfortable, functional, and appropriate for an elementary school learning environment. Midriffs must be covered at all times while at school and during school-sponsored activities. Clothing must provide appropriate coverage during normal school activities, and undergarments should not be intentionally exposed. Clothing, words, or graphics may not contain offensive, discriminatory, violent, sexually explicit, or otherwise inappropriate content. Clothing must allow students to participate safely in classroom activities, recess, and physical education. Gang-related or gang-like attire is not permitted. Pajamas and sleepwear are permitted only on designated spirit or special-event days.

👟 Footwear

Footwear must be appropriately sized, secure, and safe for walking, running, recess, and physical education. Tennis shoes or other secure, closed-toe footwear are strongly recommended for everyday school wear. Crocs, clogs, and similar slip-on shoes are not permitted due to safety concerns, particularly during recess and physical education. Jelly-type shoes and shoes with gel or liquid-filled components are not permitted due to safety concerns. High heels, flip-flops, slippers, shoes that easily slip off, and shoes with wheels (such as Heelys) are not permitted.

🧢 Accessories, Hats & Sunglasses

Accessories and jewelry must be safe, age-appropriate, and not interfere with learning or school activities. Hats and sunglasses may be worn outdoors for sun protection and during designated outdoor activities but should be removed indoors unless permitted for a school activity or an approved medical, religious, or other reason.

💇 Hair, Grooming & Make-Up

Students may express their personal style through their hair and grooming choices. Hairstyles, hair color, and hair accessories are permitted unless they create a safety concern or substantially interfere with learning. Make-up and face paint should not interfere with learning and are permitted for pre-approved school events, spirit days, performances, or other designated activities.

🤝 Applying the Dress Code

The dress code will be applied fairly, consistently, and respectfully to all students regardless of gender, gender expression, body type, race, culture, religion, disability, or other personal characteristic. Dress code concerns will be addressed privately and respectfully whenever possible, focusing on the clothing or safety concern rather than a student's body or appearance. Exceptions may be made for religious, cultural, medical, disability-related, or other approved reasons.
